I recently had the wonderful chance of traveling to Oakland, California for the 2015 Revolutionizing a Dream (RAD) Summit. It was spectacular! I had the chance to meet some amazing people from all over the U.S. The weather was beyond beautiful, a great escape from the frozen wastelands of Chicago. The conference itself was phenomenal! The reason for our gathering was to help launch the Trans/Queer Youth Resiliency campaign. The campaign is to support transgender and queer youth across the U.S and lend our helping hands.

To launch the campaign we hosted a Twitter party to tag the organization with the hashtag #HELLARAD and #RADQT. We were trending within 10 minutes! I went to the campaign repping Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health (ICAH), but, while I was there, I plugged the Chicago Media Corps and Scenarios USA name a couple times.
As part of ICAH, I helped run a workshop on birth justice, explaining the rights you have as a parent and the information that you’re entitled to as a patient. I also took part in a media workshop, showing who controls the media and how we can use it to benefit our own organization’s message.
The whole experience was truly wonderful and the people made the trip that much more enjoyable. We had the chance to walk around Oakland a bit to explore its artistic wonders and awesome scenery. While we were there they even threw a dance party! Despite being away from home, I would love to be at the next summit just to say “hi” to new organizations and any friends rejoining. All in all, the whole summit was like a big networking party allowing us to make friends and spread the word about our various organizations.
